Cougar lose to Blue Demons

The Cougar boys basketball team once again didn’t put four quarters of basketball together as they lost to Christiansburg 74-60.

Christiansburg got 24 points from Isaac Hayden and 13 from M J Hunter. Matt Collins and Jared Bruce both chipped in with seven points, apiece.

Pulaski Co. was led by senior Benjamin Poe with 13 points, A J McCloud 11 and Gage Mannon had nine points. Those three players though only scored two points in the last quarter. Down 38-35 at intermission, the Cougars scored five points in the first minute of the third quarter to take a 40-38 lead. The next four minutes would be the beginning of the end for the Cougars as the Blue Demons would go on a 15-0 run to go up 53-40 and were up 62-45 going into the last quarter.

” We can’t put four quarters of basketball together,” said a very disappointed Cougar head coach Andrew Hart.  ” We have started different lineups but it seems we will lose focus somewhere during the game.  We turn the ball over and can’t make shots.” Coach then added, ” Christiansburg made shots in the game and we didn’t. We have got to get tougher mentally and keep playing.”

Pulaski Co. has now dropped five in a row and is 3-10 overall and 0-7 in district play.

The Cougar junior varsity won a hard-fought 49-44  over the Demons JV. Peyton McDaniel knocked down five three’s as he scored 18 points.  Bradley Hudson had nine and Clay Phillips six in the win. Blue Demons got 10 points from Aidan Loudfoot.

Salem Spartans got 30 points from Ethan English, 25 points from  Alex Blanchard and 17  from Josh Bryan as they scored last 12 points of the game to beat the Pulaski Co. Cougars 84-67 in the Cougar Den.

Salem saw their record improve to 8-3 as the Cougars are now 3-9 and 0-6 in district play. A J McCloud had 17 points, Dillon Porter 15 and Hayden Gray 13 in the loss. It was a game of runs at the Cougars would go on  10-0 run,  but the Spartans would go on 12-2 run.

Pulaski Co took their only lead of the game 38-36 in the middle of the third quarter. Salem would then outscore the Cougars 17-8 to take a 53-46 advantage into the fourth quarter. Salem found themselves up 72-67 with just under three minutes to go and would then go on a 12-0 run to end the game.

“We had great effort tonight and it may have been our best effort, at least for three quarters or more,” said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. ” Salem is a very good ball club and we had a chance, but we had too many turnovers and missed too many point-blank range shots at the rim.”

The Cougars got 16 points from Bradley Hudson and nine from Peyton McDaniel. The Cougars will travel to Christiansburg  Friday to take on the Blue Demons.
