Auburn wins thriller, advances to State Final Four

Riner— Sometimes when two really good teams are scheduled to play each other, the game doesn’t match or lives up to the pregame excitement. Well, Auburn and Chilhowie baseball game lived up to the hype as the Eagles defeated the Warriors 7-6. The game ended on a bases-loaded walk-off walk. Taylor Newcome drew the base -on -balls winning RBI for Auburn as they advance to Friday’s State Semi-final game.

The game looked as though a fairly easy win for Auburn, up 5-2 after six innings. The Chilhowie Warriors ( 22-3) had other ideas as they scratched and clawed their way to four runs scored and took a 6-5 lead in their half of the seventh. Auburn ( 24-2) showed heart and determination in their half of the seventh. Catcher Tyler Sparrer hit a single and then Austin Kirtner walked to put the first two batters on, to start the inning. Parker Hale hit a routine grounder to short but the Warriors shortstop would misplay the bouncer that would score Sparrer to tie the game. The two base error left first base open and Chilhowie would intentionally walk Drew Hill to load the bases. Newcome would then walk on a 3-1 pitch that forced in the game-winning run.

Newcome started on the mound for the Eagles and went the first five innings. he gave up two runs on six hits. he walked three and struck out five. Brady Harris would then come in and went one inning but ran into trouble in the seventh, as did Keith Reed. Reed Underwood would then come in with the bases loaded and no outs and got out of the jam. The biggest play perhaps of the game occurred with the no outs and the bases loaded, with Chilhowie up 6-5. Trevor Williams of Chilhowie hit a shallow fly ball to right center that fell in front of a hard-charging Keith Reed. The Warrior runner at third didn’t read the play well or he thought the ball was going to be caught. Reed would then fire the ball to home plate. The Eagle’s catcher (Sparrer) would then run the base runner back to third but halfway down the line stopped and tossed the ball to Underwood at home plate to get the force play. Underwood would then strike out pinch hitter Daniel Hutton looking and lead-off man Greg Sanchez swinging, to end the Warriors uprising.

Chilhowie scored two runs in the second but Auburn would answer with two of their own in their half of the second. Auburn would add single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-2 advantage that lasted till the wild and wacky seventh.

Chilhowie’s Ethan Armstrong put the Warriors up on a solo home run over the left field fence as he had three hits, he knocked in two and scored a run. Sanchez has two hits and scored a run in the losing effort.

Auburn’s Sparrer and Kirtner both scored three runs apiece and Brady Harris was two for four with two RBI. Both Sparrer and Kirtner as well had two hits each. Keith Reed and Drew Hill had the other Eagles hits. Underwood got the mound win as he faced four batters striking two and walking one.

Auburn will take on the Riverheads Gladiators Friday at 1:00 pm at Calfee Park in Pulaski, in the second of two state semifinal games. The first game of the Class 1 semifinal will see PH-Glade Spring take on Lancaster at 10 am at Calfee Park.
