Two Bobcats sign letter of intent

Radford Bobcat basketball players, Quinton Morton-Robertson and Miles Jones have both signed to play, and further their education at Radford University. Radford High School head basketball coach Rick Cormany said,” These two players along with some others are 82-7 in their high school careers with this year upcoming. Their freshmen and sophomore years they helped win back to back state titles. They were 55-6. Last year these two helped lead the team to a 27-1 record. They have helped in winning three district titles, and three regional titles as well. ” Coach then added, ” Both of these two young guys are quality people and great character people and I’ve been blessed to coach these fine young guys.”

Both Quinton and Miles thanked all their coaches, administration, fans and everyone in the community and for all their support. Both will go play for Coach Mike Jones at Radford University.

Radford defense propels them to victory

Christiansburg— Playing a sunny and pretty Saturday afternoon at Christiansburg and their turf field, the Radford Bobcats defeated the Gretna Hawks 20-7. Their defense helped propel the Bobcats in the second half as they held the Hawks to 19 yards of rushing on 20 carries.

Running back P J Prioleau scored on the very first play of the game as he took hand-off around right end and scampered 782 yards down the Radford sideline for a quick six within the first 19 seconds of the game. He finished with 167 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Glenvar would tie the game later in the first quarter when Radford would fumble the ball at mid-field. Gretna then four plays later scored on a Tabron Maybins’ 31 -yard pass to Daelyn Miller in the corner of the end zone and it was 7-7 with 4:27 left.

Radford would get a 30-yard field goal from sophomore Conner Lytton with 1:19 before the half. They would strike again on their first possession of the third quarter as Justice Marshall would take pitch-out and race 41 yards and Lytton’s kick had the Bobcats up 17-7 with 8:20 left in the quarter. Their final score came with 8:29 in the fourth quarter with Lytton hitting a 42-yard field goal.

Radford ( 11-1) defense really halted Gretna’s offense in the second half. On one of the Gretna possessions, Radford sacked their quarterback three straight times for losses. It was fourth and half the football field.

Gretna ( 9-3) rushed the football 41 times for 135 yards and as said earlier, only 19 yards in the second half. They completed five passes for 58.

When asked about the first play of the game touchdown, Radford head coach Matthew Saunders replied. ” They came out in a defense we had seen on tape and PJ ( Prioleau) broke it for six. ” Coach then added,” We have lived on our defense all year. Our staff has done an excellent job all year and we had a great game plan. This was a big win for us. Gretna is a very good team and they show us a couple things we hadn’t seen. ” Coach Saunders was then asked about this year’s record compared to last years and he remarked by saying, ” Last year we lost so many games in the last quarter. We had lots of injuries and ball didn’t bounce our way. This team this year is older, tougher and lot more physical.”

These two teams had played earlier in the season at Gretna. Radford won that game 7-6 in a defensive battle. This game was also a defensive battle but the Bobcats got even more defensive in the second half of this rematch.

Radford will now play next week against the three-time, three consecutive state champions, Appomattox. Game time, day and place are to be determined.
