Fort Chiswell win takes them to playoffs

Bastian….The Pioneers traveled to Bland Co. and came away with a 29-7 victory over the Bears. The win stopped a two-game losing streak and also assured them of making the playoffs.

Fort Chiswell (5-5, 3-3) got 153 yards rushing from senior quarterback Brody Crockett and three rushing touchdowns on 30 carries. Isaac “Bevo” Dunford had 106 yards on nine carries, and Dylan Bailey rushed seven times for 105 yards.

The ball control and time-consuming drives helped the Pioneers to the win on a wet, muddy field. Their defense limited the Bears to less than 100 yards of offense.

They scored in the first quarter as Crockett capped the drive off with a two-yard quarterback sneak, and Jacob Turpin’s kick put them up 7-0 with 3:51 remaining. The Pioneers would score again at the 8:47 mark of the second quarter as Crockett again ran in from two yards out for a 14-0 lead, a lead that they took into intermission.

On their second possession of the third, they again would get a touchdown from Crockett when he ran in from three yards out. He also would get the two-point conversion run for a 22-0 score.

Bland Co. would get their lone score of the night on their next possession when running back Samuel Bright rammed his way in from three yards out. Ethan Buchanan would kick the point after making the score 22-7 with 5:38 left in the quarter.

The Pioneers would hit pay dirt one more time with six minutes to go in the game. This time sophomore Dylan Bailey would break loose for a 30-yard scamper for six, and Turpin’s kick made the final 29-7.

“We played well tonight,” said Fort Chiswell head coach Josh Wingate, who had just become a father for the first time this week. “Proud of how the coaches and players handled things this week; it’s been rather hectic.”

The win moved the Pioneers into Class 2 Region C playoffs. They will travel to Radford to take on the number one seed Bobcats (unofficially as of this writing). The two teams met back on September 7 in Radford, with Radford coming out on top 26-6. The rematch from the regular season will kick off at 7:00 pm Friday at Bobcat Stadium.
