Graham defeats the Fort Chiswell Pioneers

Bluefield…Playing on a cold, rainy night at Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers got pounded by the home-standing Graham G-men 41-10.

Graham scored at will it seemed, the whole first half. Senior quarterback and Purdue University commit Cameron Allen hit Devin Lester for a 28-yard strike for six, and then he ran in from two-yards out to put the G-men up 13-0 after the opening quarter. Graham would then score three more times in the second quarter to take a commanding 34-0 lead into intermission. Allen threw three touchdown passes in the period as he hit Lester twice. One was for 24 yards and the other a 52-yard strike. The third touchdown was Allen to Isaiah Justice, a 13-yard pass.

Allen finished the contest with 195 yards passing. He hit 10 of 13 passes, threw four touchdowns and rushed for 31 yards.

While Graham (8-1) was scoring easily, the Pioneers were held to a measly 21 total yards for the entire first half. They just couldn’t move the football.

The second half saw the G-men score on a 45-yard jaunt by Treveese Booker late in the third quarter to put them up 41-0 heading into the final quarter.

Fort Chiswell (4-5) finally crossed the goal line at the 8:23 mark left in the game as freshman running back Ezra Varney scored on a five-yard off-tackle run. He then would run in for the 2-point conversion. The Pioneers would then get a safety on Graham’s next possession with 6:09 remaining to close out the scoring.

The Pioneers finished with only 121 yards of offense, all on the ground. They were zero of three passing, with one of those being intercepted.

“It’s hard to practice how quick and fast Graham really is,” said a very disappointed Pioneer head coach Josh Wingate. “They scored the first drive, and we just never did get untracked on offense. We got behind early and that just killed us. Our players fought hard and didn’t quit, we just plain got beat.”

Besides Allen’s performance, Graham got three touchdown catches from Lester as he had 114 total yards receiving. They had 311 yards of total offense in the victory.

Fort Chiswell will be back on the road this coming Friday as they head to Bastian, Virginia to take on the Bland Co. Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Bland Co. Sports Complex.

Carroll Co. ( 3-6, 2-3 ) got their lone score at the 3:57 mark left in the fourth quarter when sophomore running back Tristan Peckron took the hand-off, went off tackle and down the Cavalier sideline for a 65-yard gallop for six.

Radford (8-1, 5-0) head coach Matthew Saunders remarked, ” We scored early in the first quarter and then again after a fumble and it helped set the tone for the game. Our defense played very well again tonight. ” When asked about shutting the Cavaliers running attack down in the third quarter, Coach Saunders said, “We made a couple adjustments and we controlled the line of scrimmage much better. I’m really pleased how we performed tonight. It wasn’t the most ideal conditions out there. It was a physical game.”
