Bobcat errors leads to Floyd Victory

The Radford Bobcats baseball team was hoping that the third time was the charm as they took on the Floyd Bufflaoes. Floyd Co. had defeated the Cats both times in the regular season, but this game was the first round of the Region 2-C playoffs.

Floyd won the game 9-3 to advance to the quarterfinals as Radford committed four huge errors that lead to five of the nine Buffalo runs. Lupe Carrillo doubled in two runs and Tyler Bain also drove in two for Floyd. Josh Landreth pitched six innings as he struck out five, to pick up the win. Ian Berry, Pressley yates Avery Chaffin and Austin Gallimore all had two hits apiece.

Radford’s Chance Morris went the distance on the mound but the defense let him down as they committed four errors that lead to five unearned runs. He walked two and struck out two. He also had a single and scored a run. Eric Burdette singled in a run in the third for Radford and Jon Woods scored a run. Logan King had two hits in a losing effort. Radford head coach Greg Ridpath said, ” We made to many mistakes. That has been our season. ” He then added,” Today was a replay of our season. We didn’t get the big hit when we needed and Floyd did.”

Floyd will now travel to Chatham, for the Region 2-C quarterfinals as Radford season came to an end.

Cougars lose to Jefferson Forest

Forest…Playing for the first time in nine days, the Pulaski Co. baseball team had a very bad first inning as they saw their season come to a halt, losing to Jefferson Forest 12-4. It was the first round of the Region 4-D playoffs for the two teams. Jefferson Forest Cavaliers scored six runs in their first at bat against Cougar starting pitcher Kellen Dalton.

The Cavaliers (16-5) jumped on Dalton scoring six runs on five hits. They sent 10 batters to the plate and they made the Cougars pay for two huge errors as well.

The score remained 6-0 going to the top of the fourth as the Cougars pushed two runs across to cut their deficit to 6-2. With two outs, Jonathan Minnick drew a walk and Braeden Blevins would then single to center. Hunter Shrewsbury would then drive both of them in as he doubled to left center.

Jefferson Forest would answer in their half of the fourth as Ben Holley doubled in Jaylen Calloway. Luke Fowler would knock in Holley and then Dylan Kramer’s sac fly would drive in Fowler for a 9-2 score.

Pulaski Co. (9-10) got two more runs in the fifth as Chris Remington singled in Logan Burchett and Blevins drew a bases loaded walk to score Trent Blankenship.

Jefferson Forest would score two more in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth to put the game away. The Cavaliers had seven batters to knock in at least one run, and eight players scored one run or more. Calloway had three RBIs as did Hunter Morrison. Kramer had two RBIs and scored a run. Luke Fowler and Holley both scored twice. The Cavs starting pitcher, Griffin Agee, went 4.2 innings as he struck out eight and gave up eight hits and all four runs. Jacob Helbing went 2.1 innings and struck out four and surrendered just two hits in relief.

The Cougars got three hits from Remington and two from Blankenship. “It was a bad night for us,” said Cougar head coach Jared King. “We had that bad first inning but the guys competed. We got some hits but we left too many men on base.” Coach King then added, “I’d like to say that these seniors have all had their moments with baseball to shine. They have been a great group to coach and they made me so excited to come to the field every day. They all have been great representatives of our program.”

The loss means the Cougar season is over as they will lose 10 seniors from the squad. They return just six players and the junior varsity players will need to step up.
