Cougars win, advance to championship

Pulaski Co. Cougars faced Tazewell in one of the Coppinger Tourney semi-final games and defeated the Bulldogs 13-2. Once again pitcher Kellen Dalton threw a well-pitched game as the senior scattered three hits and struck out seven in four and one-third innings.

Offensively the Cougars got a two-RBI game from Jon Osteen, Jonathan Minnick, Hunter Shrewsbury and Chris Remington. Remington and Shrewsbury both had two hits. Osteen, Trent Blankenship, Braeden Blevins, Brandon Neel and Drew Mabry all scored two runs apiece.

Tazewell ace Sid Willis tossed five innings striking out eight but he walked six. He balked a run in and threw four wild pitches. He also hit an inside the park home run. The Bulldog defense committed seven errors but five of those were in the last two innings long after the game had been decided. Tazewell took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second but the Cougars would tally two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. After taking Willis out the Cougars would then score six in the sixth and three in the seventh.

” We excited to be able to play for the tournament championship against Honaker,” said Cougar head man Jared King. ” I thought Kellen( Dalton) pitched really well again tonight. He’s not overpowering but he spots his pitches and we made enough plays behind him for us to win tonight. We got some clutch hits and we have been excited to play in this tournament.”

Pulaski Co. will take on Honaker Saturday at 1:00 pm for the Coppinger Championship. The game will be played at Tazewell Middle School due to a scheduling conflict with Bluefield College at Bowen Field.

Cougars defeat PikeView in Coppinger Tournament

Tazewell …After some reshuffling of the schedule, the Coppinger Tournament resumed with the Pulaski Co. Cougars playing the Pike View Panthers at Tazewell Middle School.

The Cougars scored in every at-bat as they trounced PikeView 15-5 in a five inning slaughter-ruled game. Bailey Ayers had a huge day at the plate going three for three and had five RBIs. Ayers had two singles, a double and drew a base on balls. He scored twice and pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief. Chris Remington singled and doubled as he had three RBIs and crossed home plate twice. Eight of the nine starting players had at least one hit in the victory. Starting pitcher Brandon Neel tossed four innings surrendering two runs, one earned, struck out one and allowed just two hits.

PikeView jumped on Neel in the first as the Cougars committed an error, Neel hit a batter and threw two wild pitches. The Panthers went up 2-0 before he settled down.

Pulaski Co. (4-2) would counter in the bottom of the first scoring four times on singles by Remington and Ayers, a passed ball and a Jonathan Minnick walk. They would then tally two in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth to go up 12-2.

PikeView scored three in their half of the fifth, but the Cougars would answer that with a three spot of their own to go up 15-5, a slaughter rule win and their third straight victory.

Braeden Blevins knocked in two as Trent Blankenship and Jon Osteen both scored three runs apiece. Eight Cougars had an RBI as they had a season high 12 base hits and a season high in runs scored. Cougar head coach Jared King said, “We hit the ball today. We made a couple errors that we need to clean up but we’re going to the semifinals Friday.”

PikeView got two hits from Trey Williams, and he and Luke Nash had one run knocked in each.

The win advances the Cougars into the Coppinger Tournament semifinals Friday night. The game will be held at Bowen Field in Bluefield against the winner of Tazewell and Summers Co. (WV). The game will start at around 7:30 and will be the second game of the night.
