Bobcats win first game of the season

Galax…It took three postponements and a change of venue, but the Radford Bobcats finally got to open their baseball season. The opener was worth the wait as they defeated the Galax Maroon Tide 5-3.

Senior Roman Bonet singled, walked twice, scored a run and knocked in one in the win. Chance Morris was the starting and winning pitcher as he tossed four innings giving up just one run and struck out five. Conner Phillips knocked in two runs as Justice Marshall and Morris both had an RBI each.

Cade Ashworth lead Galax as he went three for four at the plate knocking in one run and scoring one. Jacob Stuart had two hits and one RBI. Trent Tilley was the starter for the Maroon Tide as he went three innings and gave up two runs and two hits. He also walked three and struck out three.

Up 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, Radford made the game more than interesting. After getting the leadoff batter out, Galax scored a run and had the bases loaded with two outs against the Bobcats reliever Conner Phillips. The game had become a nail-biter and Radford head coach Greg Ridpath replaced Phillips with Bryce Young. Young came in to strike out the Maroon Tide leadoff man to preserve the win. “It got too interesting there at the end,” said Coach Ridpath. “Bryce (Young) really came through for us. I thought Chance did a heck of a job as the starter and Conner performed well also. He got tired and I decided to make a change.” Coach then remarked, “It was good to finally get some live action and the season going. “

The game was originally slated to be played at Radford. Their field at Scott Street was unplayable and the two teams changed the game to Felts Park in Galax.

Radford is scheduled to be back in action Friday as they hopefully will host Christiansburg, weather permitting.

Blacksburg names new coach

The Blacksburg Bruins have named Eddie Sloss their new head football coach. Coach Sloss was at Carroll Co. The Bruins job came open after Thad Wells left for Mooresville (NC) High School. The Bruins won the state title in 2016 and lost to Salem this past fall in the playoffs.

Pioneers win 1st game of the season

Fort Chiswell…Finally the words, “play ball” were heard by the Fort Chiswell Pioneers. After having two regular season games and a scrimmage all postponed due bad weather, the Pioneers got to play.

Fort Chiswell exploded for six runs in the fourth inning and four more in the bottom of the fifth to slaughter-rule Marion 11-1.

Senior Chance Davis went all five inns surrendering just one hit and one unearned run for the pitching mound victory. He knocked in one, as he had one and drew a walk at the plate. Senior Cody Burkes had two hits and a walk for the Pioneers. He got help from Aaron Crawford and Cy Underwood as both had a couple hits apiece.

Sophomore Justin Porter had two runs batted in to help the Pioneers in the win.

Marion had only one hit, that by Ty Blevins. Blevins single in the top of the fourth stopped the shut out, but it was far from enough for the Hurricanes. Alex Robinson in relief got the credit for the loss as he pitched 3.1 innings.

“I was pleased with some things I saw and not with some,” said Fort Chiswell head coach Derrick Jackson. “I thought Chance (Davis) was very good on the mound and we got some timely hits to back him.”

Fort Chiswell will be back on the diamond Wednesday, March 21, as they travel to Marion. Of course, that will be weather permitting. First pitch of the game is scheduled for 5:00 pm at Marion High School.
