Cougars win third straight game

Dublin…The Cougars turned up the pressure in the second half of the game and came away with a home victory over Lord Botetourt 68-56.

Pulaski Co. (10-5) got 21 points from Kade Akers as he hit four three-pointers. CC Grubb was the only other Cougar to produce double digits as he pumped in 11. Senior Braeden Blevins had seven rebounds and nine points. Benjamin Poe also produced nine for the Winning Cougars.

Tanner Selkirk led Lord Botetourt with 21 points and Max Burke had 18 in a losing effort.

The Cougars lead 17-16 after the opening period as Akers produced eight points. They would then get a buzzer beating three from Trent Blankenship to take a 29-28 lead into intermission.

The second half saw the Cougars turn up the pressure and Botetourt would turn the ball over four straight times that produced a 11-2 Cougar run to put them up 40-30.

A lead the Cougars wouldn’t relinquish, but they would only lead 48-45 after the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars once again go on a run; this time it was a 12-3 advantage to put the game into the win column.

“I thought we got after it a little better the second half,” said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. “I’m not too happy with our defense for the whole game. It’s a Monday and it’s a win.” He then remarked, ”Akers (Kade) had his best game offensively for us and we needed that. We need to move and share the ball better.”

The Cougar junior varsity saw their three game win streak come to an end as the young Cavaliers beat them 35-28. Todd Moore’s 12 points led the Cavs and Conner Fuhrman’s six. The Cougars seemed to be a little sluggish and a step slow on this Monday night as the ball just didn’t bounce their way. Dillon Porter scored 13 and A J McCloud pumped in seven for the losing Cougars.

Pulaski Co. will be back in action Wednesday night, as they will play William Byrd in the Cougar Den. Junior varsity tips at 5:30 and varsity at 7:00 pm.

Cougars secure win over Demons in second half

Dublin…Playing on back-to-back nights, the Pulaski Co. Cougars came out a little lackluster in the first half and found themselves down 28-26 at halftime. The second half saw the Cougars put some more pressure on Christiansburg and came out on top of the Blue Demons 61-50 to pull out an important win for the homesteading Cougars.

Pulaski Co. (9-5,5-2) got another outstanding performance from senior point guard Logan Robertson as he led them with 19 points. Senior Braeden Blevins stepped up his game in the second half as he pumped in 12 of his 14 points. CC Grubb, who scored his 1,000th point against Salem, pounded in 13 more in the win.

The Blue Demons placed just one player into double figures, with Austin Brown scoring 14. Matt Taylor hit a couple huge three’s in the second quarter but was held to just three points the entire second half finishing with nine points.

The Cougars came out after intermission and went on a 12-4 run and went up on Christiansburg 46-36 after the third period. Blevins’ hard work on the inside produced eight points to help the Cougars take the lead. In the fourth quarter Robertson controlled the offense as he penetrated and was fouled time and time again hitting eight of eight free throws and scoring 10 points. The Cougars played nine players and all of them scored.

“I thought Braeden (Blevins) and Logan (Robertson) stepped up for us in the second half,” said Andrew Hart the Cougar head coach. When asked about any changes that were made at intermission Coach Hart replied, ”We tried to pressure the ball a little more and be a little more aggressive with it the second half. Nothing major really. This was a nice win for us tonight.”

Robertson led the Cougars in assists with five and in rebounding by Blevins and Kade Akers with six each.

The Pulaski Co. junior varsity got some revenge as they defeated the Blue Demons 45-34 after an earlier season loss to the Demons. The junior varsity saw their record improve to 11-2 as Dillon Porter led them with 15 points. Hayden Gray chipped in with 11, A J McCloud pumped in nine and Nathan Swinney got six points coming off the bench. Chris Calloway led the Demons with 11 points.

The two teams will be back in action Monday night as they entertain Lord Botetourt in the Cougars Den. Junior Varsity tips at 5:30 and varsity will start at approximately 7:00 pm.
