NRV Tigers 17U baseball player commits

The New River Valley Tigers 17 U travel baseball team player Caleb Franklin has committed to Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Franklin played second base for the Tigers this summer. Caleb hit at a .363 batting clip and had a .522 on base percentage. He also finished with a .963 fielding percentage and had 79 chances. He scored 29 runs and drew 24 walks. Head coach Todd Davis of the NRV Tigers said,” Caleb had a heck of a year at second base. He was as good a defensive player we had this year.” Caleb is a senior and plays for Lord Botetourt High School. This is just the first of many more commits to come for the NRV Tigers.

Running back injuried

The Galax Maroon Tide last Friday night defeated the Bland Co. Bears 62-13 in the opening round of the Group 1C playoffs. The one thing about that game was running back Dougie Peoples got hurt in the very first few minutes. Hearing his season is over with perhaps a broken ankle or foot. Galax will be home again this Friday night as they take on the Parry McCluer Fighting Blues , who upset George Wythe in Wytheville this past Friday 14-9.

Other games this week will see EC Glass coming to Blacksburg to play the Bruins in Group 4 D. Salem will travel to Danville to take on George Washington in the other 4D game.

Group 2D action this coming Friday will pit Grayson Co. going to Bluefield to take on Graham, while Marion goes to Big Stone Gap to take on the undefeated Union Bears. Group 2C will see Floyd Co. traveling to Glenvar. Glenvar defeated the Buffaloes 35-7 back on Oct. 13. The other Group 2C will pit the Giles Spartans going to Appomattox.

Group 1 C will have the Narrows Green Wave hosting the Covington Cougars. This is a rematch of the regular season in which the Green Wave beat the Cougars 40-16. 1D will see Hurley Rebels going to Chilhowie and J I Burton going to Glade Spring to face Patrick Henry Rebels. All of these games as of this writing are scheduled for Friday at 7:00 pm.

Pioneers season comes to an end

The Fort Chiswell Pioneers traveled to Pearisburg to take on Giles in the opening round of the playoffs and saw their season come to an end as they lost 35-13.

Giles got three scores from Ryan Beidleman on runs of 85, 15 and 5 yards, Logan O’Brien scored on 55 yard run and Chaston Ratcliffe had a 40 yard romp. Four big plays accounted for almost 200 yards as the Spartans finished with 411 rushing yards on 40 carries. They had zero passing yards and only threw one pass in the game.

Fort Chiswell got 72 rushing yards from Tanner Bailey and he also had 56 yards on seven catches and a touchdown. Sean Morgan had 64 rushing yards. Quarterback Brody Crockett competed 11 of 18 passes for 86 yards and he three two touchdown and one interception.

Giles scored first on O’Brien’s 55 yard run right up the middle with 7:24 left in the opening quarter. They would hit paydirt again on a Beidleman 85 yard run to go up 14-0 with just over three minutes left in the first half.

Fort Chiswell ( 7-4) would answer with a Crockett to Aaron Crawford 16 yard touchdown pass over the middle as it was 14-7 at intermission. Giles would take the opening second half kickoff and would drive the ball 80 yards on five plays that was capped off with a Beidleman five yard off tackle run. As they would stretch their lead to 28-7 on their next possession on Ratcliffe’s 40 yard jaunt.

The Pioneers would score with 8:38 left in the game as Crockett would find Bailey in the corner of the endzone . Giles ( 9-2) would finish the scoring on a Beidleman 15 yard run to go up 35-13. He would had 285 rushing yards on 28 carries. O’Brien had 58 yards on two rushes.

” They made some big plays on us and we had a couple of breakdowns on defense,” said a disappointed Fort Chiswell head coach Todd Tiller.” They have a good football team. I’m proud of my kids. We battled and fought to the end. They left it all on field tonight.”

Giles will advance to next weeks second round as they travel to Appomattox. The Pioneers after a winless campaign two years ago have won 16 games the last two years and make the playoffs both years. This team losses only five seniors . This team had to learn a new offense with a new offensive coordinator. Coach Tiller and his staff have turned the Pioneers program back into their winning ways.

Pioneer athletes to sign

The Fort Chiswell Pioneers will have two of their athletes , to sign to further their education and athletic careers . Girls basketball player Gracie Robinson will be signing to go to Concord (WV) University to play basketball. Chance Davis will also be signing to go play baseball at Concord . Both have been starters on their respected teams since they were freshmen. Both have helped their teams advance to the state playoffs in girls basketball and boys baseball. They will join former Pioneer baseball / basketball player Bryson Booher . Booher is on the Concord baseball squad. Concord is located in Athens, West Virginia. Congrats to Gracie and Chance.

Oak Hill Academy wins big

Oak Hill defeated Moravian Prep (NC) 91-45 after going on a fourth quarter run.

Oak Hill led 43-23 at halftime over Moravian but saw their advantage dwindle to just 48-40 early in the fourth quarter. The Warriors of Oak Hill ( 4-0) then went on a 30-3 run to but the game away.

Former South Hill Va. star Keldon Johnson scored a game high 25 points in a variety of ways. Oak Hill will be back in action Friday night as they host Ridgeview Prep out of North Carolina . They game tips at 7:00 pm. They will then host Bristol Prep(TN) Saturday night with tip off scheduled for 7: 00 pm at Turner Gym on the Oak Hill Academy campus.

Fort Chiswell – Giles to meet in Pearisburg in playoff game

The Spartans were 8-2 on their regular season and last week they had a bye. They are the champions of the Three Rivers District. The head coach for Giles is Jeff Williams and he’s in his 10th year as head man and has a record of 90-28. They averaged 39.3 points per game while giving up 18.3 a game.

Fort Chiswell was 7-3 on the regular season. They averaged 29 points a game on offense and defensively surrender 18 a game.They beat Bland last Friday 47-6. The two teams have both played Radford, Floyd Co. and Graham. Giles went 2-1 and the Pioneers went 1-2 against those three teams during the season. The Pioneers are also co-champions of the Mountain Empire District.

Giles is famously known for the single wing on offense. A former Fort Chiswell Pioneer player -Ryan Beidleman – is their all go to guy. He has scored 35 touchdowns and has 212 points on the year. Beidleman is also their punter, punt returner, kickoff returner and safety on defense. He perhaps sells concessions at halftime! They have 14 seniors and 12 juniors on their roster. They have won seven straight games. Their victories are against Radford, Floyd, Christiansburg, Narrows, Alleghany, Carroll Co., James River and Glenvar. The two losses are to Blacksburg and to Graham in overtime.

” Beidleman is a heck of an athlete and its hard to simulate what they do in practice .” said Fort Chiswell head coach Todd Tiller. ” In the single wing they run the inside trap, buck play, reverse and toss sweep. Beidleman can also throw the football . ” Coach Tiller then remarked, on defense they run 52 scheme. The front line likes to slant and the linebackers will cover or fill gaps. The secondary will mainly will be zone coverage. Beidleman likes to play centerfield from his safety position. He likes to read and flow to the ball and is athletic enough to do that.”

The Pioneers offensively will go with Logan Smith at center. Billy Shrewsberry and Loopie Turpin at guards. The tackles will be Jon Gregory and Ethan Hawks.Anthony Morris starts at tight end. Brody Crockett will be at quarterback. Tanner Bailey and Aaron Crawford the wide receivers. Sean Morgan, Tyler Jakubiak and Denver Brown will see action at running backs. Zach Johnson and Ethan Woods will also see time on offense. Defensively the Pioneers will go with Shrewsberry, Gregory and Garrett Chrisley upfront. The linebackers wlll be Bailey, Crawford, Brown, Woods and Jon Poole. Morris and Logan Newman will be the cornerbacks with Morgan the safety. Johnson , Smith and Turpin will also see time on defense.

Kick off in Pearisburg is slated for Friday night at 7:00 pm.

Bobcats season comes to an end

The Radford Bobcats saw their season come to an end as they lost to the visiting Glenvar Highlanders 28-0. Glenvar held a 14-0 lead going into halftime as they scored on two Radford turnovers.

Glenvar running back Jack Leonard scored on runs of two and 11 yards. He would then score on a 71 yard jaunt to put them up 21-0. leonard would score again with 10:40 left in the game on a one yard plunge.

Radford offensively was shut down for almost the entire game. Their kicker freshman Conner Lytton misssed on a 41 yard field goal attempt just before halftime.

Leonard rushed for 207 yards as the Highlanders improved to 9-1 and advance to next weeks playoffs.
