Cougars take commanding position over Maroon Tide

Galax…The Pulaski Co. Cougars came out hitting three’s and exercised their control over the Galax Maroon Tide, totally dominating the Tide 72-20.

The Cougars almost hit as many three’s as regular field goals, 13 three’s to 15 two’s.

Playing only their second game of the season due to the football team advancing to the state semifinals, the Maroon Tide found themselves down 21-4 after one quarter. Gage Cook and Noah Hutchens led the Tide with just six points apiece.

C C Grubb led Pulaski Co. with 25 points as he stroked six three’s and didn’t play in the fourth quarter. Heath Gray pumped in 14 and Bryan Roberson contributed 12. All 12 players on the Cougar roster saw lots of action, with ten players scoring.

It was a classic mismatch from the get-go. The Cougars even shut the Maroon Tide out in the second and fourth quarters.

Cougar head coach Andrew Hart said, ”We shot the ball extremely well. Everyone got to play and 10 of the 12 players got into the scorebook.” He then added, ”We need to improve the next couple days before we play again Thursday.” Galax veteran head coach Verl Brown in his 38th year remarked,” They shot the Christmas lights out tonight and we couldn’t do anything about it.”

The win improved the Cougars to 6-2 with one game remaining before the holiday break.

Pulaski Co. junior varsity won their fourth straight and improved to 7-1 with a 54-11 thrashing of the Maroon Tide junior varsity. Only two Tide players scored, Cole Pickett with six and Kelley Barnes had five, The Cougars got 14 points from James Jackson, 11 by Jairus Miller. Justin Roberson had six, Gage Mannon five, Chris Hay, Dillon Porter and Hayden Gray all contributed four points each.

Pulaski Co will be back in action Thursday at the Cougar Den. They will host Galax as the junior varsity plays at 5:30 and the varsity contest will tip at around 7 pm.

Cougars’ hard efforts defeat Carroll Co.

Dublin…Pulaski Co. coming off a very tough loss to Christiansburg and losing some players bounced back to defeat Carroll Co. 55-47.

C C Grubb pumping in 16 points led them. Logan Robertson had 14 and Bryan Roberson finished with 11. Roberson hit all four of his free throws late and Robertson swished three of four down the stretch. Trent Blankenship also hit two of two from the charity stripe to help seal the game.

The Cavaliers were down 39-26 after three quarters but fought their way back to within two (45-43) with 2:23 remaining. Adam Horton had 13 points to lead the Cavs. Garrett Haynes and Micah Johnson had 11 and 10 points, respectfully.

The Cougars (5-2) opened the game going up 19-14 after the opening period. They would expand on that by taking a 32-18 into intermission.

“We had more intensity and played much better tonight,” said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. “We played hard and smart for the most part. We got a little gassed there in the fourth quarter.” The Cougars played without Bryant Grubb who was playing in an all-star football game. They also moved up three junior varsity kids to replace some former players. Pulaski Co. stroked six three’s in the game and hit 15 of 18 free throws.

The Cougar junior varsity moved to 6-1 on the season as they demolished the young Cavs 53-29. Julian Black had 10 points and three other players – Dre Grubb, Jairus Miller and Luke Russell all contributed with eight points apiece. Carroll Co. was led in scoring by Ian Herman’s 14.

Pulaski Co. travels to Galax Monday night and then will play them at the Cougar Den this Thursday in a make-up contest.

The Lady Pioneers ( 5-1) scored only four points the first five minutes of the game and led 15-10 after the opening period. They would warm as their full court press hurried up the Lady Bulldogs, that force numerous turnovers. They would outscore the Dogs 26-15 in the second quarter to take a commanding 41-25 lead into intermission. Leading 57-39 going into the final period the Pioneers would score 34 points in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers are playing so far this season without leading scorer from last season, Savannah Dunford. Savannah hurt her knee back this summer and had surgery and is hopefully back mid January.

Northwood coach steps down

Northwood High School Panthers head football coach Tommy Prater has stepped down. Coach Prater has been the head coach for last three years. His teams made the playoffs two of those three years. His overall record was 14-18. Just this season the Panthers finished at 1-9.

Northwood joins Christiansburg and Tazewell High Schools looking for a new football head coach.
