Fort Chiswell loses to Radford in third place game

Max Meadows…The Fort Chiswell Pioneers and Radford Bobcats faced off in the third place game of the First Community Bank / Fort Chiswell Tournament as Radford scored 19 third quarter points to propel them to a 60-43 win.

The Bobcats (5-4) took a one point 24-23 lead into intermission but would outscore the Pioneers (3-4) 19-7 in the third quarter for the victory. Quinton Morton-Robertson has 18 points in the win. Taylor Newcome had 12, D J Baylor 11 and Miles Jones came off the bench to toss in 10.

Tanner Bailey led Fort Chiswell with eight points and Isaiah Ramsey had seven points and six rebounds. Freshman Kolton Sutphin tossed in six in the losing effort. Pioneer head coach Derrick Jackson remarked,” The third quarter tonight killed us. We take spells where we don’t take care of the basketball. We need to be more consistent on the ball handling and make better decisions.”

In other action of the last day of the tournament Carroll Co. won the seventh place game by easily handling the Floyd Co. Buffaloes 55-35. The Cavaliers’ Adam Horton paced the scoring with 18 points. Micah Johnson was the other double figure scorer with 10. The Buffaloes was led in scoring by Austin Gallimore with nine points. The fifth place contest pitted Abingdon against Galax, with the Falcons of Abingdon manhandling the Maroon Tide 51-23. James Basham had 19 and Tommy Francisco pumped in 15 for the winners. Dougie Peoples led the Tide with eight.

In the final game of the night the Alleghany (NC) Trojans won a thriller over the Grayson Co. Blue Devils 41-39 to claim the championship trophy. The highlight or lowlight occurred late in third quarter as the two teams got into a fracas that saw four players total to get ejected. Three fans were also escorted out of the gym in the heated exchange between the two squads. The Trojans lost two starters in the fray and Grayson one starter. The Blue Devils lost one other player for leaving the bench.

Allegheny got 13 points from Hunter Todd and nine points apiece from Tyler Hanks and Tanner Edwards. Garrett Moore led Grayson with 15 and Wes Ayers had eight. The Blue Devils hit just one of nine free throws in the loss.

The all tournament team saw Tyler Hanks, Hunter Todd and Austin Hawkins of Alleghany (NC) and Wes Ayers and Seth Phillips of Grayson named on it. Other’s named were, Tanner Bailey and Isaiah Ramsey from Fort Chiswell, Quinton Morton-Robertson and D J Baylor of Radford and Dustin Thompson of Floyd Co.
