Game Postponed

The Fort Chiswell at John Battle benefit football game scheduled for Friday August 19 has been postponed due to unplayable field at Battle High School. Battle will be coming to Fort Chiswell for a scrimmage at 10 am tomorrow(Saturday).

Cougars have new coach

The Pulaski Co. Cougars have a new girls softball coach. Gina Miano will return to the girls softball dugout. She replaces Harold Osborne who stepped down after last season. He had taken over for Coach Miano.

Fort Chiswell wins both scrimmages

Mountain Mayhem 7The Fort Chiswell Pioneers traveled to Twin Valley to take on Castlewood and J I Burton on a hot and humid day. The first contest saw the Pioneers pass for 156 yards and rush for 110 more enroute to a 4 to 0 touchdown win. Sean Morgan carried the pigskin eight times for 107 yards , and sophomore Tyler Jakubiak had 41 yards on three rushes. Quarterback Warren Moore threw for 80 yards and one touchdown.Tanner Bailey threw for a touchdown and intercepted a pass for another Fort Chiswell score.

The second scrimmage saw the Pioneers defeat a big and physical J I Burton squad 2-1. Andrew Stoots scored on a five yard run and Colby Rider caught a 19 yard pass from Moore.

Burton’s only score came on a 18 yard pass on their 10th play of a 10 play sequence,this first time they Montain Mayhem 10got the ball on offense.

Fort Chiswell had 186 passing yards and 106 rush yards. Three quarterbacks for them completed 13 of 18 passes. Stoots had three carries for 49 yards and caught three passes for 27 more yards.Pioneer head coach Todd Tiller remarked, “I thought we looked good today. I feel much better than this time last year. I’m pleased with what I saw and there’s more positives than negatives.” He then said,” We are further along than last year and I thought our conditioning was huge today. The most welcome thing is we came out of this healthy and we willl correct some things and get back to practice Monday .”

Fort Chiswell will travel to Bristol this Friday to take on the Trojans of John Battle at 7 pm in a benefit game.

Pulaski Co. Cougars win two of three

The Pulaski Co. Cougars traveled to Richlands and won two of three scrimmages. They defeated Richlands 28-20 and Geo. Wythe 21-7. Their lone loss was to a big and talented Belfry ,Ky. by the score of 26-14.

The first scrimmage was against Belfry with the game tied at 14, before Belfry scored twice to win. The two Cougars scores came by way of runs. Hunter Thomas had a 14 yarder and Ramon Williams a 12 yard run.

The second contest saw the Cougars beat the hosts Blue Tornado. The Cougars Bryant Grubb scored on 40 and 14 yard runs. He then hit little brother CC on a 35 yard pass for six. Their last score came from a 25 yard pass from Kellen Dalton to Mason Clark.

The final action saw the George Wythe Maroons score first but then the Cougars would answer with three touchdowns to win 21-7. Bryant Grubb tallied with a 26 yard jaunt and Jamall Edmonds 40 yard sprint Their third score waas on a 40 yard pass from Grubb to Jaceri Eaves. The Cougars will play at Lord Botetourt next Friday night as they take on Rustburg and Amherst. Game time is slated for 6 pm.

Grayson Co. has new basketball coach

The Blue Devils of Grayson Co. will have a new basketball coach for this upcoming season .John Ayers will be the new coach. Grayson went 2-18 last year. Ayers has coached at Grayson back in the 90’s.

Grayson also will will have new football stands for the upcoming season as well as new sod for their football field. Glad to see new administration upgrading the athletics for Grayson.

New districts after VHSL rulings

Christiansburg had asked to join the Three Rivers District but they withdrew that today. So they will be staying in the River Ridge. The Mountain Empire will be losing Narrows and Graham. Narrows will be going to the Pioneer District, while Graham will move to the Southwest District.

Grayson Co. will stay in the Mountain Empire. Marion will go the Southwest. Abingdon next year will leave the Southwest and move to the Mountain District.

The Three Rivers District will be adding Carroll Co. and Alleghany Co.

So Mountain Empire as of now will be : Galax,Grayson Co.,Fort Chiswell, George Wythe,Auburn ,Bland Co and Rural Retreat.

The Three Rivers will have: Giles, Glenvar,Radford, Carroll Co., Alleghany Co., Floyd Co. and James River

Pioneer will consist of: Narrows, Eastern Montgomery, Craig Co., Covington, Parry McCluer and Bath Co.

Southwest will have; Richlands,Tazewell, Graham,Marion, Va. High and Lebanon.

All of this to be for the 2017 school year.

Radford football practice

The Bobcats of Radford got under way with their practices with around 55 players showing up for the varsity and junior varsity. The Bobcats look to be very athletic again this season. Their varsity lost the likes of Marcus Finley, Heth Grant and William & Mary bound Nick Ridpath. They will be younger this year but still very dangerous club. DJ Baylor, Markell Thompson ,Dale Stanley and Shawn Reed will lead the Bobcats.
