Local travel team had tough weekend
The New River Valley Tigers baseball team is made up of players from Pulaski Co., Giles, Princeton (WV), GreenBriar East (WV), Northside, Cave Spring, Lord Botetourt and Liberty High schools. This past weekend the Tigers played four games losing three and winning one. Their first two games saw them commit errors that proved costly. Taking on the TriState Muddawgs -from West Virginia,Maryland and Pennsylvania – they were down 3-0 and then had three miscues and lost the contest 8-0. The second game saw pretty much the same for the Tigers. Down 3-2 in the fifth they misplayed three balls and lost 7-2.
The third game they took on Rise 18 of Richmond,Va., and NRV got the bats rolling as they won 9-4. They finshed with 10 hits of which four of those were doubles. Pulaski Co Cougar Hunter Shrewsbury got the pitching victory. Camden Underwood of the Cougars had a double and two RBI. Sam McGlothlin of Northside High School went two for three ,with two doubles and two RBI.
Their last game of the weekend saw the Tigers lose a pitching dual, by score of 2-1. The hard luck loser on the mound for them was McGlothin. With two outs in the seventh and a runner on Rise 17 of Richmond batter hit a hot shot down the third base line that was deflected off the third baseman’s glove that scored the winning run.
McGlothlin gave up just two hits and struck out seven. For the weekend McGlothlin had three doubles and a total of seven hits in the four games and finshed with a .636 batting average. Underwood hit .500 going six of twelve. He had two doubles.
The NRV Tigers will be back in action June 24-26 at Charleston, South Carolina.
