Cougars fall to hot-hitting Blue Demons

Dublin… The Cougars ran into a buzz saw called the Blue Demons of Christiansburg. The Demons pounded out 16 hits enroute to a 10-1 victory over the homesteading Cougars.

Christiansburg (10-1) got three hits each from Ashton King and Nick Meadows. King also scored three runs and knocked in two. Meadows knocked in two and scored one. John Tuck was the starting and winning pitcher. He tossed four innings and gave up just two hits before being relieved by Corbin Vaught.

Pulaski Co. (5-6-1) could only produce four hits for the game. Those hits are credited to Grant Osteen, Andrew Lowe, Tyler Waddell and Camden Underwood. Their only run came in the bottom of the six as Osteen singled and stole second base. He moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on Underwood ground out.

The Demons scored three runs in the first on two Cougar errors and then expanded their lead to 5-0 in the second. They then scored a single run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 10-0 lead. Luke Durham, Alex Perkins and Alex Hylton all scored two runs each. All the Demon starters had at least one hit. They had six extra base hits and stole seven bases.

Cougar head coach Jared King remarked, ”They put a lot of pressure on us right from the start. They are a good ball club and hit the ball. I thought Anderson (Thomas) and Remington (Nathanael) pitched fairly well for us.“ Coach then said, ”It seemed like we were behind in the counts all game long. Christiansburg is playing at a very high level.“

Pulaski Co will be back at home tomorrow evening as they host the Spartans of Salem. First pitch is slated for 5 pm.

Pioneers slow the force of the Hurricanes

Marion… The Fort Chiswell Pioneers went on the road to Marion and came away with an impressive 6-1 victory over the home-standing Marion Scarlet Hurricanes.

The Pioneers got a strong pitching performance from Dallas Beasley. He pitched four innings giving up just one run and struck out three.

Marion’s (6-6) lone run came on a home run from Austin Wyatt in the second inning. Marion finished with just six hits, and they left eight runners stranded.

Fort Chiswell (8-1) scored two runs in the first and one run in each the fourth and fifth innings. They scored two insurance runs in the seventh on a double by Lucas Edmonds. Beasley helped his own cause driving in one run. Bryson Booher, who came in to close the game, scored a couple runs, as did Tanner Bailey.

Fort Chiswell Pioneer head coach Derrick Jackson said, ”We got a good performance from Beasley and Booher on the mound. We came up with some key hits as well as key plays on defense.“ Coach added, ”This was a big win for us after the disappointing loss to Bluefield on Monday. Fort Chiswell got a couple hits apiece from Edmonds, Bailey and Booher.”

The Pioneers will be back home Friday as they take on the Bears of Bland Co. The first pitch of the game is scheduled for 5 pm.

Cougars beat Cavaliers

Dublin… The Pulaski Co. Cougars got a complete seven-inning game from starting pitcher Grant Osteen. Andrew Lowe kept up his hot hitting, going three for three enroute to a 7-3 victory over Carroll Co. Osteen struck out eight in his complete game as he scattered 10 hits. The most telling stat for him and the Cougars was he walked nobody. Lowe, with his three hits, knocked in two more as he had five hits in his last six bats with six RBI.

Besides Lowe and Osteen, Jordan Lytton, Dylan Danner and Kam Hall had one RBI each. Jon Osteen had two and scored twice for the 5-5-1 Cougars.

Carroll Co. got three hits from Trace Davis and two from Isaiah Cupp. Jacob Breen and Brandt Puckett each had an RBI. Starting pitcher Logan Felts went four innings striking out four, but he gave up 10 hits and all seven runs.

Cougar head coach Jared King remarked, ”I believe this is the first seven-inning complete game from a starting pitcher since me and my staff have been here. I’m so happy and proud for Grant. The senior came through for us on the mound today. Andrew Lowe is stroking the ball right now, and you have to give credit to Jon Osteen and Hall (Kam) for getting on base in front of him. We still made some errors and we need to cut those down.” Coach then said, ”The last two games we got the effort we needed to win games and hopefully we can keep this kind of effort going forward.”

Forward indeed as the Cougars will take on Christiansburg next. The only really bad thing about this win is the Cougars did commit five errors. That’s something they can’t do against Christiansburg.

The Cavaliers of Carroll Co. didn’t really make the Cougars pay for all their errors. Carroll jumped out to a 2-0 lead as they scored twice in the second. The Cougars then answered that with six runs in the bottom of the second.

Pulaski Co. will host the 9-1 Christiansburg Blue Demons this Friday with the first pitch slated for 5 pm.

Cougars easily take the win over Galax

Dublin… Playing on beautiful day for baseball the Pulaski Co. Cougars clobbered the Maroon Tide of Galax 22-7 in five innings. The Cougars stopped a three game losing streak as they got their best starting pitcher effort of the season. Dylan Danner went four innings giving up three runs on five hits as he struck out three. He gave up just one hit in the first three innings and no runs as he started his fourth inning. He retired eight in a row at one point from the first through the third. He also walked twice, scored two runs and knocked in one.

Grant Osteen led the Cougars (4-5-1) as he went four for four, knocking in three and scoring twice. Andrew Lowe had four RBI as he went two for three at the plate. Jordan Lytton who got a start at second base had two hits to go along with two walks. He scored three times and knocked in three.

Galax (6-7) used six pitchers in the game as Jake Snyder took the loss giving up six runs in the first inning. Caleb Spurlin was two for three, scoring two and had two RBI. Lucas Dalton had two RBI as well for the Tide.

Pulaski Co. scored six runs in the first, one in the second, five in the third and 10 more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Cougar head coach Jared King said, ”We needed this kind of game. We lost some tough games here the last couple weeks are so. We lost three in a row and tied one in the last four games.“

Coach then added, ”I thought Danner (Dylan) pitched real well for us. It was probably our best start for a starting pitcher. He brought a lot of energy to the mound. He got tired there in the fourth but what a great effort he gave us. I thought Jordan (Lytton) played real well for us. He came through at the plate and at second base defensively. Lowe and Grant Osteen both had a big day for us. When those two hit like that, we can score some runs. It was great to get most all the players in for some action. We took advantage of some of Galax’s mistakes like some of the teams have done to us.”

The Cougars will be back in action this afternoon as they host the Carroll Co. Cavaliers. First pitch is slated for 5 pm.
